I chose to use Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show as the basis for this 5-6 day lesson play. I feel that this film encompasses all of the elements that make up a great
film: complex characters, interesting narrative, masterful cinematography and
universal themes. I also think that students will appreciate and enjoy the film as a
whole while undoubtedly relating to the prevailing coming-of-age theme. My
ultimate objective for this unit is to teach students how to analyze,
understand, and interpret film as a work of art – similar to the way one might
study literature. This unit analyzes the film in several different ways,
and at the completion of it students will have increased their creative,
communication, cooperation, critical thinking, and technological skills.
Hopefully, these skills will translate to the viewing of other canonized films,
ultimately making students more discerning moviegoers. |
