Below are two unit plans I created in my first semester as a pre-service English teacher. |

This lesson has students doing a close reading of a text in order to create an interview scenario between a main character and a reporter. While conducting the interview, both students will take notes that will ultimately form the basis for a newspaper article they will create. All of the final projects will contend for publication on the school's website.

This lesson has students compare/contrast
a song, essay, and novel that all revolve around DuBois' theme of
"double consciousness." The culmination of this activity has the students creating their own prose reflecting on a time in their life when they struggled with this sense of two-ness. These writings will be compiled into a booklet and shared with classmates as well as parents on back-to-school night.
